Chapter 9

About an hour after dinner, Alex set about the work of mounting a digital camera on a tripod as Laura watched. She thought about the futility of applying such devices to the search for activity in the beyond. She knew it was there, could feel it... capturing some manifestation of it on a camera made no difference to her. But then, she never shared these feelings with anyone. “So what kind of ghosts are we expecting to see up on this mountain?” she asked, knowing Alex wouldn’t have much of an answer.

Alex chucked, “To be honest, none. I just wanted to come up here. We probably won’t be running into any spooks till we’re back in another town on another ghost tour.”

“Pity.”

“I know,” Alex responded as he finished with his work setting up the camera, “but then maybe not so much. Cold drinks and good conversation... no classes to make in the morning... those are better than ghost sightings anyway.”

At that moment, Theresa and Karen made their way downstairs as Jason emerged from the kitchen with a couple of beers, tossing one to Alex.

“Should we really be filming them?” queried Karen. She was referring to Jason and Alex rather than any ghostly forms. She was mildly concerned about what kind of behavior they might capture on camera before the night was over.

Theresa answered with a question, “Why not?”

“OK. You make a compelling argument.”

Alex selected some music on the tablet, a well chosen assortment of moody tunes from various seventies prog rock bands. The tunes fit the mood, although most of the group was unfamiliar with them. As the music played, Karen and Theresa started a round of poker at the kitchen table. Jason and Alex drank their beers while reducing the light levels in the room to test the night vision on the camera. Laura sat on the sofa, her mind steadily invaded by a feeling of discomfort.

“Guys, we can’t play poker in the dark,” piped up Theresa.

“Make it a round of strip poker, and I will light this place up like daylight,” Jason tried with a hint of a hopeful grin on his face.

“That’s not happening,” said Karen. “Get on with your testing, and give up on that line of thought.”

“I just had to try, that’s all.”

A now familiar voice suddenly interrupted their conversation, overriding the outpouring of music from the tablet.

They all stopped in their tracks, unable to digest exactly what was happening.

Strange luminescence...

We could not find its source.

It beckoned, promising folds of night

to hide us from the wrecking wheel of the day.

“Oh, no. Not again,” Karen whispered as she began to back as far away from the tablet as she could get.

The voice continued.

Odd tap on the glass....

They all heard a tapping sound but could see no cause for it....

It summoned us.

Into velvet wrappings, we proceeded,

only to discover the temporal nature of such veiled entrance.

Even now, I recall the morning’s chill.

Theresa looked in Laura’s direction, trying to remain calm and remind herself that surely they were
